In-process measurement and compensation of core diameter after fluting operations

Flute grinding removes large volumes of material while manufacturing cutting tools and the resulting wheel wear makes it difficult to maintain a high tolerance on core diameter during lights-out manufacturing of large batch quantities. The built-in ruby probe is ANCA's in-process solution to measure, compensate and maintain core diameter stability within specified tolerances. The ruby probe operations will perform a core searching algorithm that finds the deepest point of the flute. All fluting operations are supported for this function and the digitising results can be viewed through its display option and can be exported to a file after the cycle finishes. The ruby probe can be used on all ANCA machine platforms.
RUBY PROBE CORE DIGITISING SUPPORTED OPERATIONS
This cycle is used to measure the core diameter at specified positions along a fluted tool using the ruby probe. The cycle can be linked to the following operations.

  • Flute from Solid
  • Flute Polish
  • Formed Flute from Solid (2, 3 or 4 flutes)
  • Formed Flute Polish (2, 3 or 4 flutes)
  • Profile Core Formed Flute from Solid (2 flutes)
  • Profile Core Formed Flute Polish (2 flutes)
MAINTAINING TOLERANCE IN PRODUCTION GRINDING
This feature allows for the core to be compensated to its nominal value on the selected linked fluting operation for the next tool of the batch. When this feature is used, the percentage amount of compensation to its nominal value can be specified. This nominal value will depend on the type of diameter tolerance type used. The diameter tolerance options can be specified as either the ‘Absolute’ or ‘Relative’ form.

  • If the upper and lower compensation limits are enabled, digitised points on the tool that are within the boundary will not be compensated on the next tool.
  • If there are points that are within ‘tolerance’ but are outside the compensation limits, those digitised points will be compensated on the next tool.
  • If any digitised points on the tool are outside ‘tolerance’, then tool is classified as ‘rejected’ and the next tool will not be compensated. The action it will take will depend on whether you have selected to ‘continue’ the process or ‘stop’ the machine. If stop was selected, it will only stop after a number of consecutive rejected tools which is controlled by the ‘Rejected tool limit’ parameter.
CYCLE TIME BENEFITS
This feature can be used to save overall cycle time when grinding multiple tools by determining the frequency of core digitising for a batch of tools. The options that can be chosen are:

  • All Tools - This option will perform the cycle on all tools within the batch
  • First tool only - This option will perform the cycle on only the first tool within the batch
  • Specify interval - This option allows you to specify the number of tools to skip in between core digitised tools
DISPLAY AND EXPORT DIGITISED RESULTS
This feature allows you to visualise the digitised core diameter values and the option to export the results into .CSV format for personal use.

  • Individual tool display - This option allows you to select individual tools in a batch that were digitised and plot a graph of the results. The graph will show you the specified tolerance boundaries in blue, the compensation limits in green, the digitised core diameter values in red, and also a table of numeric results for each point. The data that is shown for an individual tool can be exported as a .CSV file.
  • Batch tool display - This option allows you to display a batch of the tools that performed the ruby probe core digitising cycle and plot a graph of the results. Each graph will show the specified tolerance boundaries in blue and the digitised core diameter value in red for a particular x-position for a batch of tools. Furthermore, you can selectively choose which x-position graph to display and its size. The data for the batch of tools that performed the core digitising can be exported as a .CSV file.
