Could combining blank preparation and cutter grinding help reduce lead times, handling and production costs?
Traditionally, tool manufacturers have used separate machines for blank preparation, tool grinding and finishing operations. While this approach remains suitable for many applications, every additional machine, set-up and handling stage adds time, work-in-progress and another opportunity for variation.
As lead times shorten, batch sizes decrease and demand for special tools grows, manufacturers are asking whether a cylindrical blank can be taken through to a finished cutting tool on one machine and in one set-up.
For the right application, the answer is yes. Combining blank preparation and cutter grinding can reduce handling, re-clamping and operator intervention while improving process consistency and creating greater opportunities for unattended production. Whether it is the right approach depends on tool geometry, tolerances, batch volume, diameter range and the amount of cylindrical grinding required.
The case for an all-in-one process
Moving from a cylindrical blank to a finished tool in one set-up can reduce:
- Separate blank-preparation operations
- Handling and re-clamping
- Set-up and changeover time
- Work-in-progress
- Operator intervention
- Variation between processes
This is particularly valuable in mixed-batch production, where manufacturers need to move efficiently between standard tools, specials and short production runs.

Why headstock capability matters
Blank preparation requires more than grinding spindle power. Cylindrical and peel grinding may involve extended operation at higher headstock speeds. When a dedicated OD grinder remains the better choice
A CNC tool grinder will not replace every cylindrical grinder. For high-volume cylindrical production, extremely tight OD tolerances, long blank-preparation cycles or specialised applications, a dedicated OD grinder may remain the more productive option.
Machine selection should reflect the manufacturer’s regular workload. The MX7 supports tools up to 25 mm or 1 inch in diameter, while the heavier-duty TX7+ supports tools up to 32 mm or 1¼ inches. The decision should be based on the tools produced every day, not only the largest tool a manufacturer may occasionally need to quote.
Building the business case
Manufacturers should assess the complete production process, including:
- Cycle and set-up time
- Labour and handling savings
- Scrap and rework reduction
- Unattended production potential
- Changeover requirements
- Inspection and compensation needs
- Tool size and geometry range
- Future workload
Application trials are essential. Testing representative tools including the smallest, largest, highest-volume and most challenging parts can confirm cycle time, quality, set-up requirements and automation performance before investing.
