Wheel Qualification Probe: Automatic measurement and qualification of wheel pack inside the machine

Auto wheel pack qualification is available on the FX, MX and TX range of machines. It’s a substitute for qualification bars and off-machine wheel setters. It uses a Renishaw probe to qualify the wheel pack inside the machine with the support of wheel probe software.

Using iGrind, the operator can choose what aspects of the wheel pack to qualify before triggering the qualification cycle. Before the wheels are digitised, the probe itself is re-qualified using a qualification block attached to the spindle housing. Wheels need to be measured in the 6 o’clock position, to avoid collision with coolant pipes.

All machine platforms have an indexable wheel spindle as default, meaning the spindle can be set in axis mode (Q-axis) for commanded position rotation. This allows the operator to specify in iGrind how many points around the wheel are to be digitised for the wheel qualification.

Types of wheels able to be qualified include 1V1, 1A1, 11V9, 2CH3R, Double Radius, 1F1, Profile, Radius Wheel and 11M2.

The systems for the FX, MX and TX7 series machines are different as per the images below.

ELIMINATES THE NEED TO MANUALLY QUALIFY THE WHEEL PACK
The wheel qualification is a very accurate process and the tools ground depend on the accuracy of the wheel pack qualification. There are several methods to qualify a wheel pack which includes manual process using a known carbide blank, external machines or wheel pre-setters.

The manual qualification has its own de-merits since it’s a manual process by an operator and could vary depending on experience of the operator. External qualifications need wheels to be taken out of the spindle and this could introduce runout of the wheelpack once re-mounted.

The recommended option is to use an automated wheel qualification method inside the machine with wheel pack mounted on spindle which gives accurate and repeatable results. This process also considers the runout of individual wheels if at all any.
ABILITY TO QUALIFY WHEEL PACK INSIDE THE MACHINE ON THE GRINDING SPINDLE
The suitable and recommended process to qualify a wheel pack is while it is mounted on the spindle since this gives the right “Q” position. This can be done once the wheel pack is dressed and mounted on the spindle inside the machine to get the correct orientation and runout as well.
INCREASES MACHINE PRODUCTIVITY
Qualifying a wheel pack inside the machine increases the productivity on the machine since the values are directly written to the wheel editor during the process. External qualifications require the data of wheel packs to be imported into the machine and there are chances of errors happening at the same time. Qualifying inside the machine takes care of any unknown errors by the operator and external machines.
ACCURATE AND REPEATABLE
The accuracy of the wheel pack qualification directly reflects the quality of the tools ground and it’s important to get the first tool right every time. This is possible with the wheel qualification inside the machine since this is a very accurate and repeatable process.
ABILITY TO CHECK WHEEL RUNOUT ON INDIVIDUAL WHEELS ON WHEEL PACK
There is an option available in wheel probe qualification to choose several points on the circumference of the wheel. This captures the wheel runout and considered while grinding.
